In Hoc Signo - Song in Latin and Koine Greek
Here’s another original song, this time about the mighty Constantine the Great, his miraculous vision of the Cross, and his victory over the tyrant Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. Music, lyrics and performance by The Skaldic Bard (joined by the legendary Lady Skald). The song also features a short poem written and recited by my good friend Gabriel Olearnik.
The Roman Empire was divided between several emperors vying for power. In 306 AD, the (supposed) tyrant Maxentius presided over Rome and Italy while Constantine ruled the western provinces (Britain, Gaul and Hispania). Constantine invaded Italy and marched on Rome, culminating in the battle of Milvian Bridge, located just north of the city. Constantine broke through Maxentius’s lines and drove him towards the Milvian Bridge from which he fell, succumbing to the waters below.
According to Eusebius of Caesarea, before the final battle, Constantine saw a miraculous Cross in the sky alongside the Greek words Τούτῳ νίκα, meaning “In this, conquer”. Constantine would then have a vision of Christ in a dream, who bade him march to war under this sign. The degree of his personal faith is fairly mysterious; he is said to have lived most of his life as a pagan until his miraculous visions led to his conversion.
Constantine adopted the Chi-Rho symbol (☧) as part of his military standard. The symbol takes its name from the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ, Χριστός (Christos): Chi (Χ) and Rho (Ρ). While Eusebius describes the heavenly sign that Constantine saw in the sky as a cross rather than a Chi-Rho specifically, the Chi-Rho became a symbol of Constantine's reign, appearing on his coinage and labarum.
Constantine the Great is one of my favourite figures in history (in fact, he’s my confirmation saint; he’s venerated as a saint in eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches), so I have been wanting to release a song about him for a good while. I had a general melody set aside with some lyric ideas, and have just recently found the inspiration to go through with it.
I hope you like it. Please leave a like and comment if you enjoyed it (I love reading your thoughts), and consider subscribing if you’d like to see more.
I have not used AI in the production of the music, performance, or lyrics. I apologise in advance for any mistakes. As ever, the music itself is not meant to be authentic to the time period; it is entirely modern and informed exclusively by my personal inspiration.
Please also consider becoming a member of The Skaldic Guard to help support the channel and for a range of perks, including instrumental uploads of my songs (second tier). I’m only able to continue making videos with your support, so it’s very much appreciated.
