PPP TODAY: The Dangote Refinery Revolution — From Nigeria to Kenya
Voice of Nigeria はナイジェリアの公共放送です。
From Nigeria to Kenya, the Dangote refinery story is taking a new turn.
The commissioning and expansion of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos has positioned Nigeria as a major refining hub, with the facility designed to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day and supply both domestic and export markets.
Now, the Dangote Group is taking the refinery model to East Africa. On September 30, 2026, construction was formally launched in Lamu, Kenya, for a proposed 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery, backed by a reported $16 billion investment. The project is expected to include a 1,000MW power plant as well as fertiliser and chemical manufacturing facilities.
So what does this mean for Kenya, Nigeria and the wider African continent?
On this edition of PPP TODAY, we examine the Dangote refinery revolution: the economic thinking behind the Nigerian model, Kenya's ambitions to reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products, potential opportunities for jobs and industrial development, and the challenges surrounding land, environmental concerns, infrastructure and crude-oil supply.
PPP TODAY — examining how one of Africa's biggest private-sector investments could reshape the continent's energy and industrial landscape.
